The Human Rights and Equity Committee was formed at the TNG
Sector Conference in Las Vegas, Nevada in July 2006 to
increase diversity within the ranks of the The Newspaper
Guild.
Mission Statement
The TNG -CWA Human Rights and Equity Committee will
increase the participation of equity seeking groups at all
levels of the union and in all leadership positions at the
Local, National and International levels and as delegates to
the District Councils, Representative Councils and the
Sector Conferences. It will strive to achieve a diversity
of leadership to reflect our communities.
Goals And Objectives

Outreach at
the local, district and community levels

Establish a
mentoring program

Survey the
representation of members of equity seeking groups in the
membership

Establish a
network

Create
literature to attract new activists and inform members of
their rights

Translate
all literature into Spanish in the United States, French
in Canada; and other languages on request

Establish a
web page and other internet communications

Double the
number of members of equity seeking groups at conventions

Establish
Human Rights programs at every District Council and
Canadian Representative Council at least once a year

Carl
Younger
Chair
Carl
Younger started
at the Boston Globe Newspaper as a Copy-boy in 1971.
Other jobs at the Globe include Wire Room attendant,
Library Assistant, Library Associates, and Circulation
outside sales. Studied Economics at U-Mass Boston and
attended Harvard University extension program. Union rep
1998 through 2002. Executive board member 2002 through
present. TNG-CWA New England region Human Rights and
Equity Representative. Hobbies Chinese, Japanese, Korean
and Pilipino Martial arts. |

Vernon Clark is a
journalist at the Philadelphia Inquirer where he has
worked for more than two decades in a variety of
positions, including assistant editorial page editor and
copy editor. Most recently
Vernon has been a
neighborhood reporter covering the north and northwest
sections of
Philadelphia.
He has received several honors for his reporting,
including being named Journalist of the Year for 2005 by
the Philadelphia Association of Black Journalists for
his coverage of youth violence. This summer he received
the Essence of Fatherhood Award from the city’s Father’s
Day Rally Committee, a local organization that honors
the positive contributions of black men in the
Philadelphia
area. Before joining the Philadelphia Inquirer, he
worked at the Boston Globe and the Akron Beacon Journal.
The son of a union activist,
Vernon has been a member
of the Newspaper Guild for many years, holding positions
in
Akron, and
Philadelphia,
where he is the chairman of the local Representative
Assembly. A graduate of
Temple
University,
Vernon is
married with two children. He is an avid freshwater
fisherman and outdoorsman. |

Yoko
Kuramoto-Eidsmoe is president of the Pacific
Northwest Newspaper Guild (TNG/CWA Local 37082).
She also serves on CWA’s National Committee on Equity
and District 7’s Equity Committee. She has worked on the
copy desks of The Seattle Times since 1997. Before
that, she worked at The News Tribune (Tacoma, WA) and
The Statesman Journal (Salem, OR). She lives in Seattle
with her husband, Craig Eidsmoe, and their three cats. |

Randye Gilliam is the
First Vice-Chairperson and Grievance Chairperson of the
Standard & Poor’s Unit of the Newspaper Guild of New
York and also serves on the Executive Committee of the
New York
local of The Newspaper Guild. In 2007, Randye was
honored as one of three co-winners of the Newspaper
Guild of New York Tom Keenan Service Award. Randye is a
Sr. Copy Editor at Standard & Poor’s in
New York City, and is a
graduate of
Cornell
University.
In addition to her guild commitments, Randye is active
in her community and her church. |

Tiffany
Heath
is a proud member of the Washington-Baltimore Newspaper
Guild, Local 32035 of The Newspaper Guild-Communication
Workers of America. Tiffany also serves as the Secretary
for the Guild staff union of the AFL-CIO in Washington
DC and is a member of the Executive Committee of Local
32035. She is originally from Newark, New Jersey
and is a loyal Detroit Tigers fan. Tiffany is the
National Coalition Organizer for the Voice@Work campaign
of the AFL-CIO. |

Natalie
Hill
is
the first vice-president of the Newspaper Guild of
Pittsburgh Local 38061 and serves as chair of its human
rights committee. During the 2006 TNG Sector Conference
in Las Vegas, Nevada, the Great Lakes District Council
nominated Natalie to serve as an alternate
representative on the TNG-CWA Human Rights and Equity
Committee. She was later appointed as a member of the
committee. Natalie works as a news assistant/paginator
in the business department of the Pittsburgh
Post-Gazette. |

Ka Yan Ng
is a member of the
Canadian Media Guild and president of the Thomson
Reuters branch. Before that, she was vice-president of
CMG's Reuters branch, which is made up of about 90
members from editorial, technical and administrative
departments across Canada. Ka Yan also serves on the CMG
National Executive and its management and education
committees.
She is the first
Canadian member of CWA Canada to attend the CWA's
Minority Leadership Institute (Class of 2008), a program
designed to increase the involvement of minorities and
women at all levels of the union. Ka Yan is a reporter
in Toronto. |

Vincent Proteau
is a member of the
Canadian Media Guild and Secretary / Treasurer of the
Aboriginal Peoples Television Network branch. Vincent
also serves on the CMG Human Rights & Equity Committee,
and is the Webmaster for the TNG-CWA Human Rights &
Equity Committee. Vincent is Métis, of Cree and French
Ancestry, and works as an Audio Engineer and Graphics
Designer in Winnipeg, Manitoba.

Mathew
Olson is a member
of the Kenosha Newspaper Guild TNG-CWA Local 34159.
He has been a reporter at the Kenosha News in Kenosha,
Wisconsin since August of 2005 and currently covers city
politics. Matthew is a graduate from Marquette
University. He has been a member of the Human
Rights and Equity Committee since September of 2008. |
