TNG-CWA Human Rights and Equity Committee
December

PRESENT: Michael D’Souza, Chair; Natalie Hill; Sheila Lindsay;
Yoko Kuromoto-Eidsmoe; Carl Younger; Debbie Thomas, TNG-CWA

The
meeting
1) Minutes: The
committee received and approved the minutes of the last meeting,
held on Saturday, November 4, 2006.
2) Carl Younger
proposal for outreach: The committee discussed Carl Younger’s
proposal for to reach out to the union membership and the
community at large in Boston.
Carl reported
that he had talked to Susan Moyer at the University of
Massachusetts in Boston about material that shoulod be included in
such a collection. He is also looking into the American Labor
Studies for possible assistance. And, at the meeting of the North
East District Council he asked for donations of material.
Carl found some
good material at the Boston Globe research library on the labor
movement and other issues like modern slavery.
Debbie reported
that she was working on the budget of $5,000 the equity committee
has recommended for this project.
3) Web design:
Debbie reported that she has not managed to contact the person who
looks after the TNG web page, Russ Caine. She also said she’s
asked Randye Gilliam to extend the free posting of the protype for
a month.
4) Debbie Thomas
updated the committee on financial support from the TNG-CWA for
two members at large, one from the United States and one from
Canada, to attend meetings of equity seeking groups such as the
National Association of Black Journalists. This matter is still
under discussion at the TNG-CWA.
5)
Yoko
Kuromoto-Eidsmoe
shared details about the diversity survey being done by the CWA.
She also provided the committee with links to the CWA diversity
pages on the web.
6) Miscellaneous:
Carl Younger reported that the union has a tentative agreement
with the Boston Globe. Members voted the first tentative agreement
down. The new draft agreement includes some.
