MINUTES OF THE

TNG-CWA Human Rights and Equity Committee

July 14, 2007

Meeting at the TNG-CWA Sector Conference, Royal York Hotel, Toronto
Prepared by Michael D’Souza

PRESENT: Michael D’Souza, Chair; Yoko Kuramoto-Eidsmoe; Randye Gilliam; Natalie Hill; Carl Younger; Fareed Mohammed; Debbie Thomas, TNG-CWA Director of Human Rights;

ABSENT: Vernon Clark; Judy Lee

The committee held a brief meeting during the sector conference after members were appointed by their various constituencies.

The committee welcomed the new member from Canada, Fareed Mohammed.

Chair: Randye Gilliam moved that Michael D’Souza again serve as chair of the committee. The resolution was seconded by several others and passed.

Middle Atlantic District Council: Henry Holcomb, president of the Middle Atlantic District Council, informed the committee that his district had chosen Randye Gilliam from New York and Vernon Clark of Philadelphia as the alternate. The committee discussed the two appointments and noted that committee was structured to have only one appointment from the district. The committee also noted that all decisions during the first term of the committee were made by consensus and no votes were held. Also, the committee noted that much work needed to be done. The committee agreed that both Randye Gilliam and Vernon will participate in all meetings and the committee will continue to make decisions by consensus. In case there is a vote, and both Randye and Vernon are present, Randy will have one vote.

Meetings: The committee agreed to meet by telephone conference once a month and more often if needed. The first meeting will be held in September.

Other: The committee agreed that it will use suggestions made at the workshop on Diversity in the Workplace the previous day at the sector conference as the basis of its deliberations.

These suggestions are:

Outreach to journalism schools and community colleges.
Carve outs/In Reach Co-workers
Attend Minority Journalist Conventions/Unity
Survey Membership
Focus on Commercial
Diversity Committees with Management
Labor Movement/Civil Rights Movement
Partner with schools

The committee adjourned to meet again in September.
