MINUTES OF THE
TNG-CWA Human Rights and Equity Committee
March 10, 2007
Telephone
conference call at 1:00 pm (1300) Eastern; 10:00 Pacific
Prepared by
Michael D’Souza
PRESENT: Michael D’Souza, Chair; Yoko Kuramoto-Eidsmoe; Carl
Younger; Sheila Lindsay; Randye Gilliam; Natalie Hill; Debbie
Thomas, TNG-CWA Director of Human Rights
Special Guest:
TNG Secretary-Treasurer, Bernie
Lunzer.
ABSENT: Matthew
Harper, Secretary; Datejie Green, Vice Chair;
1) Web site: TNG
Secretary-Treasurer, Bernie Lunzer reported that the Beta version
of the TNG equity web site is up and the site should be live in a
couple of weeks. The address is http://guildequity.org/. The
committee agreed that Randye and Michael will work on getting
additional content to the web designer in the next two weeks.
Members of the committee are to send Randye brief biographies for
inclusion on the website. Bernie noted that it would be possible
to include an on-line survey on the site to consult the membership
on issues, if the committee wished to do so
2) Carl Younger
proposal for outreach: Carl Younger reported that the Boston local
is still waiting for information on the transfer of funds for the
out reach program. Bernie assured the committee that he would talk
to the Boston local president Dan Totten about that on Monday. He
explained that the TNG pays on the receipt of invoices; that the
TNG would reimburse the Boston local for the expenditures.
Carl reported
that he’ll be contacting members of equity seeking groups in the
Boston area to invite them to form discussion groups under the
outreach program, exploring issues such as the historic role of
blacks in the union movement involving other members of equity
seeking groups in the movement.
3) Outsourcing:
Bernie asked for the committee’s thinking on the issue of
outsourcing by employers in Boston. The consensus on the committee
that TNG would be just as concerned if the outsourcing was being
done to England and Germany as to India
4) TNG
convention: Debbie said the president, Linda Foley, had asked if
she and the committee were considering a human rights-equity
workshop at the convention in Toronto. The committee agreed that
such a workshop was a good idea.
Next meeting: The
committee did not set a date again on but Saturday, April 7, 2007
at 1 pm EST (10:00 am PST) is suggested now. Please email Michael
if this is a problem.
Adjournment: The
committee adjourned at about 1:30 EST (10:30 PST)
