March 29, 2008

Telephone Conference

PRESENT: Michael D'Souza, Chair; Yoko Kuramoto-Eidsmoe; Randye Gilliam; Natalie Hill; Joe Lapi; Sheila Lindsay; Carl Younger; Melissa Nelson, TNG-CWA Sector Rep; Linda Foley.

ABSENT: Olivia James; Sherri Borden Colley; Vernon Clark; Fareed Mohammed.

MINUTES PREPARED BY MICHAEL D'SOUZA.

The committee started its meeting on schedule at 1 p.m. Eastern, 10 a.m. Pacific. The agenda for the Human Rights Conference in Las Vegas on Sunday, June 22, was the main topic of discussion.

The committee agreed to the agenda as attached. A possible addition is Jim Gross from Baltimore. Sheila said she’d like to ask him to speak about socialism and unionism. Carl told the committee that he had spoken to Professor Jeffrey Waddoups about areas he would like to have covered such as neoliberalism.

Joe Lapi is continuing to work on organizing the reception.

Michael informed the committee that he had received an e-mail from Scott Stephens saying that three of the five members of the finance committee had approved the budget for the conference. The other two members are away.

The committee discussed how locals would recover the costs of sending members of the committee to the conference. The budget for the conference includes funding to cover travel costs and other expenses for committee members to attend the meeting. In cases where committee members are also delegates to the CWA meeting it is hoped that the locals will use any money saved to send other participants to the human-rights conference.

Next meeting

The committee agreed to meet again on Saturday, April 19, 2008 at noon Atlantic; 1 p.m. Eastern, 10 a.m. Pacific.

Adjournment.

The committee adjourned at 1:45 p.m. Eastern, 10:45 a.m. Pacific.
