MINUTES PREPARED BY Carl Younger.
Called to order at
1:00 pm
eastern time.
The discussion went to the possibility of sending a request to the
district councils and Locals to:
1) Include in the roll call and allow full participation for
elected representatives of the Human Rights and Equity committee
to attend delegate meetings to observe and contribute Ideas for
language that may relate to Human Rights and Equity.
2) Petition that Locals allow access to District council meetings
to HREC member
To allow them to report on committee
projects and to gather information from the district councils on
subjects related to human rights and equity.
3) Petition the locals, District councils, and the International
to agree on sharing the cost Equity Committee members would incur
to attend CWA/TNG functions that require issues of Human Rights to
be addressed.
Carol agreed that we should write up a proposal and present it.
Carl said he would write up a draft for the committee’s
approval.
The discussion went to a discussion
suggesting that locals request that access to language classes be
supplied by the companies using the rational that their employees
will
be more readily accepted if there was some attempt to learn about
the communities they serve and that some financial motivation to
learn might be offered. Both the company and the employees would
benefit.
Yoko brought up the fact the CWA’s minority caucus
will be on the Friday of the upcoming convention in
Washington
and that our committee chair should take this opportunity to meet
and interact with caucus members.
Carl said he would petition his local regarding the cost.
Carol said to send her a written request and the TNG will
reimburse some portion of the cost.
Sheila said she would
take care of the letter to Carol.
It was suggested that we have our next
meeting on July 24th during the conference in
Washington
but we would have to get a final agenda before a time could be
designated.
Yoko said she would email that information to Carl as soon as she
has it.
The meeting was adjourned at 1:38 pm.
